MEDIA RELEASE FROM EARTHINSITE (April 2007)

1943 WARTIME PHOTOGRAPHY OF SYDNEY IS NOW ON-LINE

Sydney 1943
Historical 1943 black and white photography of the Sydney urban area taken during the height of World War II, is now available on-line at www.city2see.com. Warships are in the harbour and trams are at Circular Quay.

Taken in May/June 1943 the photography covers nearly 2,000 square kilometres and has a ground resolution of 2 metres. It extends from Hornsby in the north to Oatley in the south and west as far as Prospect/Toongabbie. There is also a corridor of photography along the old Great Western Highway as far west as Penrith.

Using current addresses users can search on a specific address, browse around streets, suburbs and neighbourhoods, or choose from a list of places of interest. Overlay property boundaries on the images with a simple mouse click. Using current addresses and boundaries users can see what their property looked like over 60 yrs ago.

Earthinsite also has higher resolution (15cm) 2005 colour photography of Sydney. Comparisons between the two highlight the tremendous changes that Sydney has undergone over the last 6 decades.

Searching and viewing browse images from the database is free. Higher resolution digital and printed images, including laminated and framed products are available from as low as $14.90.

The service uses technology developed by Australian company Earthinsite.com Pty Ltd and relies on NSW Road Traffic Authority supplied imagery recently processed by Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) - Australia’s leading spatial information company. The property boundary and address information has been licensed from MapData Sciences Pty Ltd, PSMA.

Some of the many uses of this historical aerial photography include:

  • Neighbourhood Studies: Compare 2005 photography on City2See to see how suburbs have changed. Paddocks turned to houses. The Eastern Suburbs before they were built up.

  • Wartime Research: Naval ships at Garden and Cockatoo Islands. The harbour defence net at Laings Point. Bustle at Victoria Barracks. Warplanes at Sydney Airport.

  • The Changed Face of Sydney: A tram shed at Bennelong Point, open spaces at Taronga Park, a CBD without skyscrapers.
