NEWS FROM EARTHINSITE (October 2008)
AUSTRALIA Topography and Bathymetry New Satellite Image Poster Now Available
Canberra October 2008
Earthinsite.com Pty Ltd is pleased to announce the publication of a new coloured satellite image poster of Australia produced from satellite data
from NASA’s MODIS series of orbiting satellites.
‘The Australian land mass looks so red when viewed from outer space. It has the oldest and least fertile soils, and is the driest inhabited continent. Only the south-east and south-west corners of the continent have a temperate climate.’
This outstanding new poster (to the right) includes bathymetry data of the ocean floor compiled from GEBCO (General Bathymetric Charts of the Oceans) data
sets. The bright blue colour represents shallower water or continental shelves making it easy to see that Australia sits on the Indo-Australian Plate.
We know that the first inhabitants entered the continent on foot, by crossing what is known as the Torres Strait today when the sea levels were
lower over 40,000 years ago. All this is evident from looking at this map.
There is so much detail available in this image that a great many other natural features can be seen. For example the world heritage listed Great Barrier Reef off the north eastern coast and the world’s largest monolith, Uluru (Ayer’s Rock) in the Northern Territory, can easily be identified.
The poster includes Australian State/Territory boundaries, is in Albers Equal Area Conic projection, has a 10° latitude/ longitude grid, measures 686 x 838 mm, is printed on good quality paper and retails for $29.95. It has been produced in conjunction with USA company Newport Geographics. To purchase a copy go to Earthinsite.com and click on the Satellite Poster Maps icon.
